Residential

Houses, in time.

John Pfeifer Design begins with one small backyard studio. The longer view is larger.

The longer view

A building tradition, carried forward

The Pfeifer family has farmed, milled lumber and built houses, barns, cabinets, furniture and boats in Ontario since 1865. The backyard studio is where that work begins again, at the smallest scale.

Toward houses, cottages and farmhouses

In time, the hope is to grow toward private residences, cottages and farmhouses, drawn with the same care for proportion, light and plain, good materials. Below is how the practice plans to work.

Planned services

In time, the practice plans to bring design for the house, its interiors and the land around it under one roof: from concept to completion, planned and coordinated together. None of it is offered yet, but I'm always glad to hear about a project.

Home & cottage design*

Custom home design, cottage design and farmhouse design, plus renovation and addition design for houses already standing. Planned for Ontario, from the GTA to Muskoka.

Interior design & decorating*

Rooms planned from the inside out: layout, cabinetry and built-ins, finishes, lighting and furniture, chosen to suit the house and the way you live in it.

Landscape design

The land around the house: the approach, gardens, terraces and planting, laid out with the buildings so the whole property reads as one place.

Planning & coordination

One plan from first sketch to finished house: early budgets and schedules, and coordination with builders, trades and consultants, so the design holds together through construction.

Each service will also be available on its own, à la carte, for homeowners and builders who need one part done well.

*Some home design and interior design work requires a provincial qualification or registration. Where a project needs one, that work will be provided under the appropriate Ontario qualification or with licensed partners.
